McKinstry Farms • Tips from Farmer Will
Plant Type: Annual
Season: Spring to Fall
Cauliflower needs full sun to develop tight, healthy heads — aim for 6–8 hours of sunlight each day.
Keep the soil evenly moist, but not soggy. Cauliflower needs about 1–1.5 inches of water per week.
Farmer Will's Tip:
"Cauliflower prefers steady moisture and cool weather — too much heat and the heads will become loose and bitter."
Grows best in 55–75°F.
High temperatures can cause the heads to “button,” or form small, tight clusters instead of large heads.
Cauliflower thrives in rich, well-draining soil with plenty of compost.
Fertilize every 3–4 weeks with a balanced fertilizer to encourage healthy head development.
Protect plants from extreme heat or cold by providing some light shade if necessary.
Ensure the soil stays moist but never soggy, especially during head formation.
Buttoning: Occurs when temperatures rise too quickly — plant early in cooler months.
Cabbage Worms: Inspect leaves regularly and treat with an organic insecticide if needed.
Cauliflower heads are best harvested when they are compact and tightly wrapped. Once they start opening, they lose flavor and texture.
