Brussel Sprouts

McKinstry Farms • Tips from Farmer Will

Plant Type: Biennial grown as Annual
Season: Fall

Light

Full sun is best for strong stalks and tight sprouts.

Water

Water regularly to keep soil evenly moist, about 1–2 inches per week.

Farmer Will's Tip:
"Brussels like it steady and cool. Don't let them dry out."

Temperature

  • Best between 45–75°F.

  • Tolerates light frost — cold even improves flavor.

Soil and Fertilizer

  • Plant in rich, firm soil with compost added.

  • Feed with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer midseason to support strong stalks.

Care Tips

  • Remove lower yellowing leaves to direct energy into sprout growth.

  • Sprouts mature from the bottom up — harvest from the bottom first.

Common Problems

  • Cabbage Worms and Aphids: Watch the undersides of leaves and treat as needed.

Good to Know

Brussels sprouts are sweeter after a light frost. Patience pays off!
