December is a quieter month in the fields, but it’s one of our busiest times for planning. While the fields rest, we’re actively harvesting fresh hydroponic lettuce, cucumbers, and cherry and grape tomatoes from the greenhouse, with slicing tomatoes coming soon. Even in winter, our greenhouse keeps providing fresh, local food while we make plans for next season.

Hydroponics vs. Field Production

Many people ask what makes hydroponic produce different from field-grown crops. Here is some information:

  • No soil needed: Plants grow in nutrient-rich water, so roots stay clean.

  • Consistent growth: Climate and water are controlled, so we can harvest tender, flavorful greens and tomatoes even in winter.

  • Faster harvests: Hydroponic crops often grow more quickly and consistently than field crops, giving us reliable production.

  • Year-round local food: While the fields rest for winter, the greenhouse continues to supply fresh produce to our community.

Hydroponics doesn’t replace field farming—it complements it. Our field crops rely on seasons and weather, while the greenhouse allows us to provide fresh, local food even when winter arrives.

Looking ahead, we’re ordering seeds, reviewing what worked well this year, and making notes on how to improve. And we’d love your input—what crop would you like to see us grow next year? Your feedback helps shape our plans and ensures we’re growing the food our community wants.

Thank you for supporting the farm through every season. Your support allows us to keep growing, and planning for another year of fresh, local food.
